VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Freshman Katie Scheck (Greensboro, Ga.) backed up a solid opening round with a 1-under, 69, on Tuesday morning during the second round of the Evie Odom Invitational at the Princess Anne Country Club.
Playing as an individual, Scheck climbed 20 spots between the two rounds and is currently tied for 30th. Scheck, who hit 12-of-12 fairways on the day, began her round on the tenth hole and went out in 1-under and came in an even-par to secure the second under-par round of her young collegiate career.
“Throughout the entire day, I felt smooth and confident. I just played golf and had fun,” mentioned Scheck. “My driver was working and my drives were very long which put a wedge in my hand on most holes. I just hit good golf shots and played to my strengths, my irons and putter.”
As a team, Penn State improved on its opening round score by nine strokes finishing the day 14-over and currently sit 11th in the 13-team field. Charlotte holds the 360-hole lead at 1-over after firing 1-under on the day to move up one spot. The big mover was the College of Charleston climbing five spots and into second at 4-over for the championship following a 3-under second round. Coastal Carolina, South Florida and Sacramento State are each tied for third at 5-over to round out the top-five heading into Tuesday’s final round.
Senior Sarah Willis (Eaton, Ohio) finished the second round 3-over, 73, and currently sits tied for 19th at 3-over for the tournament. Classmate Taylor Waller (Canonsburg, Pa.) used a 2-over, 72, to move into a tie for 45th position entering the final round while sophomore Mathilde Delavallade (Royan, France) and junior Isha Dhruva (Katy, Texas) carded rounds of 74 and 75, respectively, to round out the countable team scores.
“We had more birdies and less penalties today which helped us,” commented head coach Denise St. Pierre. “We hope to close out the tournament with our best round tomorrow. I am very proud of the way Katie played, she plays with little fear and allows herself to stay happy no matter what and that can go a long way on a course that can be so penalizing.”
Penn State is back on the course tomorrow for the second round starting on the back nine with tee times beginning at 8:22 a.m.
