EUGENE, Ore. – Led by sophomore Stefanie Deng, who finished the day tied for second place, the Washington women’s golf team wrapped up the first day of the 2022 Pac-12 Championships in a tie for third place, just four strokes behind the leaders.
Deng finished Monday’s round at 1-under par, shooting a 71. After the first of three rounds at Eugene Country Club, she’s just one stroke behind the leader, USC’s Brianna Navarrosa, and tied with two other golfers for second place.
Washington shot a team score of 6-over 294, tying the Huskies with Arizona State. Stanford (2-over 290) leads the tournament, with USC (4-over 292) second.
“I’m pleased with the effort,” said UW head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “It was nice to see people step up when our No. 1 didn’t have a particularly great day.”
As the UW players – who began their rounds on No. 10 – made the turn, the Huskies had moved into a tie for first place, with Deng briefly topping the leaderboard by herself. But with the field very tightly packed, UW moved up and down the top half of the leaderboard as each score was reported.
In the end, only six strokes separated first place from seventh after the finish of the first round, leaving a majority of the 11 teams in the hunt.
Deng opened her round with a double-bogey on No. 10, but then made four straight birdies on holes 13 through 16. She finished with five birdies, two bogies and the double.
Freshman Jamie Hsieh and junior Brittany Kwon both finished their rounds in a tie for 15th with matching 2-over 74s. Hsieh made three birdies – all of them over the span of four holes – and five bogies, while Kwon carded two birdies and four bogies.
Sophomore Camille Boyd scored a 3-over 75 (one birdie, four bogies) to find herself in a tie for 26th on the individual leaderboard, while freshman Kennedy Knox, at 6-over, is tied for 39th after day one.
“I’m super proud of Stef, not only a great round but more impressive after making double bogey on her very first hole,” Mulflur continued. “Brittany played much better, which is extremely encouraging for all of us. Conditions will be much tougher as wind and more rain are expected tomorrow.”
The second round of the three-day tournament gets underway Tuesday morning. UW players will tee off of hole No. 1, beginning at 9:45 a.m. PT.
