EUGENE, Ore. – Bolstered by three players shooting scores under par Tuesday, the Washington women’s golf team finished the second round of the 2022 Pac-12 Championships in third place, just one shot behind co-leaders Arizona State and Oregon.
Play was suspended due to darkness with members of five of the 11 teams still on the course, meaning that the second-round results are not yet finalized. After those remaining players wrap up their second rounds, the third and final round commences tomorrow morning at Eugene Country Club.
ASU, Oregon and UW – the top-three teams at the moment – all completed their second rounds.
“Wow! What a day!” said UW head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “We just managed to finish our second round before dark. There are still players that have to finish round two before we can even think about round three.”
Washington sophomore Stefanie Deng, one of three Huskies to shoot a 1-under 71 Tuesday, is 2-under for the tournament, tying her for second place with one other golfer on the individual leaderboard, four strokes behind the leader.
The Huskies were one of three teams to score under-par as a team Tuesday, a day that included a weather delay of more than five hours. Only four of the five Husky golfers had teed off before play was suspended at 10:17 a.m. due to the poor weather. After a wait of more than five hours, golfers returned to the course and resumed the second round at 3:30 p.m. At 8:00 p.m., the round was suspended once more due to darkness.
Washington’s score of 1-under 287 left them with a total of 5-over 581 through two rounds. No. 2-ranked Oregon shot a 3-under 285 and No. 7 ASU posted a 286, leaving both of those teams with a two-round score of 4-over 580.
The field continues to be very tightly packed as first and seventh place are separated by just five strokes.
“I’m super proud of the team today,” Mulflur explained. “It was tough with a very long weather delay, and then having to restart several hours later. I thought they handled all of it with a lot of maturity. We are hoping to get the final round in, but it is all weather dependent. Regardless, these guys have grown tremendously this week,…
