James Allen Named Big Ten Golfer of the Week

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State men’s golf sophomore James Allen has been named Big Ten Golfer of the Week after winning the Rutherford Intercollegiate individual title, as announced by the conference office Thursday morning.

Allen won the individual championship at the 45th-annual Rutherford Intercollegiate last weekend after finishing tied for first at 3-under, 210, and defeating teammate Patrick Sheehan in a playoff tiebreak. Allen became the first Nittany Lion to win the Rutherford individual title since former two-time All-American Cole Miller did so in 2018.

Allen shot a 2-under, 69, in the first round and career low-tying 5-under, 66, in the second round. He carded a 75 in the third and final round to finish tied for Sheehan for the top spot, but defeated his teammate in the playoff tiebreak to secure the individual title. It marked Allen’s first-career collegiate tournament victory.

Allen picks up the first Big Ten weekly honor of his career. It’s the second time this season a Nittany Lion has been named the Big Ten Golfer of the Week after Sheehan earned the honor during the fall.

Penn State won its seventh-straight Rutherford Intercollegiate team title after rallying in the third and final round to erase a four-stroke deficit and earn a two-stroke win over second-place No. 33 Michigan State.

The Nittany Lions return to action this weekend at Ohio State’s Kepler Intercollegiate Saturday and Sunday.
