Three Wildcats Earn All-Big Ten Honors

EVANSTON, Ill. – Three Wildcats received Big Ten honors, the conference announced on Wednesday.

Lauryn Nguyen was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-Big Ten, while Jennifer Cai received First Team All-Big Ten honors and Kelly Sim was named Second Team All-Big Ten.

Nguyen is the sixth Wildcat to be named Big Ten Freshman of the Year in program history, joining Kelly Sim (2020), Stephanie Lau (2016), Hannah Kim (2015), Kaitlin Park (2013), and Alice Kim (2004). Northwestern’s six Freshman of the Year awards trails only Ohio State and Purdue for third most in conference history.

The Seattle, Wash. native was recently named to the All-Big Ten Championship team after finishing in sixth-place at the tournament and helping the Wildcats secure a third-place team finish. Nguyen also posted top-20 finishes at the Rucker Intercollegiate and Northwestern’s Windy City Classic, after finishing in eighth-place in her collegiate debut at Michigan’s Wolverine Invitational.

Sophomore Jennifer Cai earned First Team All-Big Ten honors for the first time in her career. Cai posted an impressive third-place finish at the Big Ten Championships last weekend, leading the ‘Cats to a third-place finish overall. She also finished in the top-15 at the Silverado Showdown earlier in April.

Kelly Sim was named All-Big Ten for the fourth consecutive year, earning First Team honors in 2019 and 2020. Sim was named Big Ten Women’s Golfer of the Week on Feb. 2 after winning all three of her matches at the Big Ten Match Play Championship to help Northwestern win the inaugural tournament title. Sim also posted a top-20 finish at Northwestern’s Windy City Classic.
