Cards Stand in 10th after Day One of Norman Regional


LOUISVILLE, Ky.Chris Francoeur fired a 1-under-par 71 to lead the University of Louisville men’s golf team to 10th place after the first round of the Norman Regional played at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club on Monday.
 
The Cardinals shot a 9-over-par 297 on the first day of the regional, sitting 15 shots off the line to advance with 36 holes to play.
 
Top-seeded Oklahoma leads the field at 11-under-par and South Carolina is second at 10-under. Auburn and Utah are tied for third at 8-under-par and Texas is in fifth at 6-under-par.
 
The Cards need to finish in the top five to advance to the NCAA Championships in Scottsdale, Ariz.
 
Starting on the back nine, Francoeur raced out of the gates with three birdies on the first five holes and five on the first nine to end his round in a tie for 18th place. He shot 5-under-on the back nine and 4-over on the front. The senior birdied No. 11 and No. 13-15 to start his day at 4-under-par.
 
Jiri Zuska and Walker Franklin are each tied for 45th place after carding rounds of 3-over-par 75. Nick Tenuta is tied for 53rd place after shooting a 4-over-par 76 and Max Kennedy is tied for 61st place after his round of 77.
 
The Cardinals return to the course on Tuesday morning for the second round of action.
