BRYAN, Texas – Alabama golfers Canon Claycomb and Thomas Ponder each improved on moving day Tuesday at the 2022 NCAA Men’s Golf Bryan Regional. Claycomb’s round of 2-under par 70, which included a four-shot swing over a span of 13 holes, highlighted the day for the Crimson Tide duo.
Claycomb began his round at 2-over after four holes before going 4-under par on the back nine to finish with a 2-under par 70 for the day. He enters the third round in a tie for 12th overall with a 36-hole total of 2-under 142 (72-70).
Meanwhile, Ponder also had a solid day with a second consecutive 73 to finish in a tie for 32nd – a two-spot improvement from round one – with a 2-over 146 (73-73).
The top individual not on an advancing team from the regional will qualify to compete at the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships which will be played May 27-June 1 in Scottsdale, Ariz.
- Noah Goodwin, the top golfer for current eighth-place SMU, would be the regional’s individual qualifier after two rounds with a 5-under 139 (71-68), three shots ahead of Claycomb
- Claycomb opened the day with pars on Nos. 1 and 2 before back-back-bogeys dropped him to 2-over par early
- Claycomb went on to par the remaining five holes on the front nine
- The Bowling Green, Ky., native began the back nine with three consecutive birdies, including dropping a birdie on No. 10 for a second-straight day
- After three pars, Claycomb birdied the par 3 No. 16 before parring out to finish the day
- Claycomb leads all individuals on par 3 scoring average at 2.63 (-3)
- After recording one double-bogey and one bogey in round one, Ponder opened with four bogeys compared to only two birdies to finish his front nine at 2-over par
- He responded with birdies on No. 12 and No. 14 to drop to even par for the day
- A bogey on the par 5 15th-hole followed by three consecutive pars to end the round resulted in his second-straight round of 1-over par
Bryan Regional Information
- Ponder and Claycomb will be grouped together for the third and final round and will tee off at 10:04 a.m. CT off Hole No. 1
