Trojan freshman Jackson Rivera posted his fourth sub-par round in his last six to remain squarely in the hunt for both a berth into nationals and a regional win after the second of three rounds at the NCAA Championships Stockton Regional at The Reserve at Spanos Park on Tuesday (May 17).
Rivera, a 2022 All-Pac-12 Second-Teamer and All-Freshman pick who is playing as an individual this week, is now in a four-way tie for 10th at 5-under 139 (68-71) after a 1-under second round.
He is two back of a six-way tie for first with another three players at 6-under, not to mention seven players at 4-under in the 75-man field.
Rivera, seeded second among individuals, is after a ticket into the main NCAA Championships set for May 27 to June 1 at Grayhawk G.C. in Scottsdale, Ariz. The low individual on a team not advancing out of each of the six regional sites will advance to Arizona, an opportunity at the moment very much up for grabs in Stockton.
Rivera bogeyed the third hole today ahead of birdies on 4 and 6 and he turned at 1-under. He bogeyed 11 and erased it with a birdie on 12, briefly got to 2-under on 16 before finishing his round at 1-under.
“Heading into tomorrow, I’m just trying to post a low number and give myself a chance to win,” Rivera said. “I’m just excited to tee it up tomorrow and play some golf.”
Today’s effort again increased Rivera’s team-leading totals to 19 rounds under par and 22 rounds of par or better. His team-best stroke average now stands at 71.75.
He will tee off at 9:53 a.m. PT in Wednesday’s final round.
