Canon Claycomb’s Clutch Comeback Falls Just Short in Extra Holes in Drama-Filled Final Round at the NCAA Bryan Regional

BRYAN, Texas – Alabama’s Canon Claycomb rallied throughout Wednesday’s final round of the 2022 NCAA Men’s Golf Bryan Regional, forcing a four-man playoff to determine the top individual finisher on a non-advancing team before falling just short. Claycomb closed the event in a five-way tie for fifth overall with a 3-under total of 213 (72-70-71), while teammate Thomas Ponder tied for 39th with a 222 (73-73-76).

The dramatic conclusion to the three-day, 54-hole event was set up when Claycomb birdied No. 17 to create a four-way tie alongside TCU’s Aymeric Laussot, SMU’s Noah Goodwin and Oregon State’s Carson Barry. All four golfers finished with identical totals of three-under par.

However, Claycomb would go on to bogey the first extra hole and was eliminated from playoff contention. Barry would go on to defeat Goodwin and advance to the NCAA Championships next week.

What They Said

  • Jay Seawell: I am really proud of both Canon and Thomas for getting to this point. They have led us all year long both on and off the course and both deserve to be here. This is a team event and when you play as an individual, you get the worst tee times and practice times and such, but I thought both of them handled all that really well. I am proud to be their coach. They have built the foundation and set the tone moving forward of what Alabama golf will be in the future. I am really looking forward to these two and the rest of our team leading us back to where we belong.”
  • Canon Claycomb: “This was an awesome experience. The whole week, the course and everything else was great. It was my second regional, but this obviously felt a lot different without the rest of the team here. I thought I got off to a hot start to put myself in contention but then my play sort of leveled out. I got a good birdie on No. 17 and played in a playoff which really got my adrenaline flowing. It was a great experience to be a part of and really a lot of fun. Any time you wear the crimson and white on the golf course is special for us.”
  • Thomas Ponder: “I agree with Canon that it’s always special for us when we are representing Alabama, especially in this type of setting. For me, it was just one of those weeks where I just couldn’t get much going. I wasn’t hitting the ball good enough to build momentum going into the back nine. I…
