Golfers in England are blessed with the quality of courses on offer up and down the country, and Pleasington Golf Club (opens in new tab) in Lancashire is another to add to your must-play list after featuring in Golf Monthly’s list of 100 Hidden gems.
The picturesque heathland course is easy accessible from all major motorways and just five minutes from the M6 (Preston) and less than one hour from the major cities of Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds.
The club’s championship course, which dates back to 1891, is set in picturesque and tranquil setting within the ancient woodland of the historic Hoghton Tower estate.
Pleasington is currently half way through a million pound restoration of the course and clubhouse that has been funded by its own members’ investment to restore the superb vistas of the rolling Lancashire countryside and improve the drainage and bunker positions to maintain the challenge for the modern golfer.
The club has a thriving membership, which is evident from the Good2Great programme (opens in new tab) started in 2021 that saw members buy in with a levy of £750 each to be paid over the next five years. The goal is to take the facilities on offer to the next level and cement Pleasington as one of the best golfing destinations in the north west.
The project’s aim is to ‘transform’ the club’s future and ‘restore’ its glory with the goal of becoming a Top 100 England course and the standout inland course in Lancashire.
The course keeps going from strength to strength, having now completed 9 holes with the plan to do 3 more each winter over the next three years. Holes 7, 8 & 9 were redeveloped over the 2021/22 winter as part of the Good2Great programme, which saw a huge amount of work on tees, bunkers, fairways & greens.
