John Phillips Named New Maryland Men’s Golf Head Coach


COLLEGE PARK, MDJohn Phillips, who has coached in each of the last eight NCAA Championships and has deep roots in the region, has been named the new head coach of the Maryland men’s golf program by Damon Evans, Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics on Tuesday.
 
Phillips has served as the assistant coach at the University of Virginia for the last six seasons as the Cavaliers received a berth to the NCAA Championships in each of those campaigns. Phillips was also instrumental in two Virginia golfers winning ACC individual titles. 
 
“John is a rising star in the golf world,” said Evans. “He knows the region as well as anyone having heavily recruited the DMV for more than a decade. John has a winning pedigree, having been to the NCAA Championships in each of his last eight seasons at Virginia and VCU. John is incredibly organized and has a plan to return Maryland men’s golf to the national stage. We are excited to welcome him to our One Maryland family.”
 
A native of Richmond, Virginia, Phillips has coached four All-Americans and 12 Academic All-Americans and has been a part of three conference champions. 
 
“I am honored to be named the next head men’s golf coach at the University of Maryland,” said Phillips. “I want to thank Damon Evans, Cody Gambler and the search committee for their belief in me and their commitment to the program. It became clear throughout the process that the University of Maryland is a special place full of passionate individuals. I’m excited to begin working with our student-athletes to achieve success on the golf course and in the classroom.”
 
Phillips joined the Virginia staff in August of 2016 after helping Virginia Commonwealth to three consecutive Atlantic 10 titles from 2014-16. He spent four seasons with the Rams, joining the staff in 2012. 
 
While at Virginia, Phillips coached All-American Thomas Walsh who won the 2018 ACC Championship, shooting a record 16-under 200 in the event.  In 2017, his first season with the Cavaliers, Virginia won four tournaments, finished as the runner-up in two other events and placed 10th at the NCAA Championships, the best showing in program history. Jimmy Stanger won the ACC individual title and three Cavaliers earned All-America honors.
