ST. ANDREWS, Scotland – Former UCLA men’s golf standout and PGA Tour professional Patrick Cantlay (2010-11) rose 19 spots on leaderboard after a blistering 5-under 67 in the second round of The Open Championship at The Old Course in St. Andrews, Scotland on Friday.
Cantlay, who recorded his first sub-70 round score at the major event, now sits in a four-way tie for eighth place. Cantlay trails first place Cameron Smith by six strokes heading into the weekend.
Cantlay scorched the front nine with five birdies and parred the remaining four holes. Cantlay drove the par five, 367-yard fifth and made the green in one shot to secure an easy birdie. He would get up to 6-under on the day following another birdie on the par five 14th before bogey No. 17.
Joining Cantlay in eighth place is new UCLA men’s golf head coach Armen Kirakossian‘s former prodigy Sahith Theegala who starred at Pepperdine from 2015-20. Also in eighth place are Taylor Gooch and Adam Scott.
Cantlay’s best finish at The Open Championship came in his first appearance at the event in 2018 when he tied for 12th.
UCLA alumni Corey Pavin (1979-82) still owns the Bruins’ best finish at The Open Championship, tying for fourth in 1993.
