Dylan McDermott finished second in qualifying at Rancho Murietta (Calif.) Country Club with a 68-71—139 (-5) effort, one stroke off the lead. He was tied for third, one stroke back after his morning round, but he and Zachery Pollo caught and passed both of those players just four holes into the second round. But McDermott had to rally to earn the second spot, as he was 4-under through 12 but then recorded two bogeys and a double going into No. 18. Now in a tie for third and trailing by one shot, he birdied the par-4 hole and leapfrogged the competition to secure the second and final qualifying spot.
He had two eagles, seven birdies and 22 pars on the day, with four bogeys and the one double. Pollo was medalist at 6-under 138.
A few minutes later and down the coast in Mission Viejo, Justin Biwer wrapped his day with a 5-under 71-66—137 scorecard, also finishing second. Biwer was in fifth after the first time around the MVCC track, but came back with the low round of the day in the field to take the runner-up spot, two behind medalist Patrick Welch.
Starting on No. 10, he was 3-over at the turn, but rallied with three birdies on the front nine to get back to even par. He continued his strong play, scoring a 31 (five birdies) on the front nine of round two to settle into the top two in the standings. He had nine birdies and 24 pars with just two bogeys and the double Monday and played his final 27 holes on the day at 8-under.
“Really good days for Dylan and Justin – excited for them and the program for making the U.S. Amateur in New Jersey,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said. “They’ve had really good summers and keep getting better and better across the board and this will be a great way to cap off their summer play at the world’s best amateur championship.”
The 122nd U.S. Amateur will take place August 15-21 in Paramus, N.J., at The Ridgewood and Arcola Country Club courses. Stroke play will narrow the field to 64 for match…
