Four Badgers named GCAA All-America Scholars

MADISON, Wis. — The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) has named four Wisconsin men’s golfers as 2021-22 All-America Scholars presented by Srixon/Cleveland Golf.

Seniors Griffin Barela and Robbie Morway, junior Coalter Smith and sophomore Cameron Huss have been selected as honorees for the prestigious GCAA national honor.

Wisconsin was also named as one of the GCAA’s 2021-22 Outstanding All-Academic Teams after earning a grade-point average (GPA) over 3.0 as the Badgers earned a 3.11 GPA during the spring semester and hold a 3.406 cumulative GPA.

Barela, who hails from Lakewood, Colorado, competed in all nine events for the Badgers in the 2021-22 season. He qualified for the NCAA Regional and finished tied for 60th (73-76-75=224 (+11)). He finished his season with a 71.44 average and his career as a Badger with a 73.06, both of which set new program records for the Badgers after besting former Badger Jordan Hahn’s marks of 71.69 season average and 73.08 career average (minimum of 50 rounds required). Barela is a four-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and graduated with a dual degree in political science and statistics. He plans to continue practicing and competing as a professional golfer in the PGA. This is Barela’s third GCAA All-America Scholar honor and was also named to the GCAA PING All-Region Team for the Midwest.

Morway, a native of Mequon, Wis., competed in eight tournaments with the team and one as an individual to mark an appearance in all nine tournaments this season. Morway finished the season with a 74.45 average and earned his highest finish tied for 31st at the Schenkel Invitational. He averaged 75.42 to close out his final collegiate season. He is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and graduated with his business degree in consumer behavior and marketplace studies. He plans to pursue career opportunities in New York to work in the wealth management and financial industries.

Smith, of Gross Pointe Farms, Michigan, played in all nine tournaments with the Badgers and recorded five top-25 finishes. Smith matched his career-low finish coming in fifth at the Big Ten Championship with a 73-74-71=218. He was named to the 2022 Big Ten All-Championship Team and averaged 73.22 for the third-lowest team average this season. Smith is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and his major is legal…
