PARAMUS, N.J. – Senior Peyton Snoeberger recorded a par on the par-3 2nd hole to win his Round of 64 match in 20 holes over No. 1 seed Luke Gutschewski at the 122nd United States Amateur Championships.
Snoeberger becomes the first Boilermaker to advance to the round of 32 since Adam Schenk reached the round of 32 in 2012.
The Williamsport, Indiana, native jumped out to a 4-up lead through eight holes against the co-medalist, by playing the first eight holes in even-par. Gutschewski then won four of seven holes from 10 to 16 to tie the match with two holes to play. Both players birdied the par-5 17th hole and parred the par-4 18th.
On the first playoff hole, both players hit the ball into the left rough and each had about 15-foot birdie putts. Snoeberger was first to putt and his putt lipped out to set up a potential-winning putt by Gutschewski. His put slid about three feet past the hole and he wound up making par.
On the second playoff hole, No. 2, Gutschewski put his tee shot in the greenside bunker while Snoeberger was safely on the putting surface for about a 30-foot birdie putt. Gutschewski blasted his bunker shot from a plugged lie to about 10 feet, while Snoeberger nestled his birdie putt to about three feet. After Gutschewski missed his par putt, Snoeberger calmly knocked in his par putt to win the match in 20 holes.
Snoeberger will now face Ohio State standout Maxwell Moldovan in the round of 32 on Thursday morning at 8 a.m. ET, at the Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, New Jersey.
