Women’s Golf | September 01, 2022
Sophomore Amari Avery, a 2022 All-American first team selection, is among 25 women’s golfers on the 2022-23 Preseason ANNIKA Award Watch List, announced today by Golfweek and Golf Channel.
Avery, one of eight golfers from the Pac-12 on the list, was a finalist for the 2022 ANNIKA Award as well as forWGCA Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors despite only joining the Trojans as a spring semester freshman.
She earned WGCA and Golfweek All-American first team notice, USC’s first freshman to earn such plaudits since Annie Park and Kyung Kim both did in 2013.
Avery posted three wins (including at NCAA Regionals), a tie for second, a tie for fifth, a tie for sixth and a tie for eighth among her first eight stroke-play starts.
Her team-leading stroke average of 71.64 in 28 rounds was good for sixth on USC’s all-time season chart while her three wins tied her with Sophia Popov for fourth on USC’s season-chart behind NCAA winners Annie Park (2013) and Mikaela Parmlid (2003) and All-American Irene Cho (2006), all of whom had four.
She led USC with 10 rounds in the 60s, tied for second-most in a season at USC with Park and one back of Kim, both set in 2014.
Avery’s sophomore teammate Xin (Cindy) Kou was on the Preseason ANNIKA Award Watch List last season.
