Young Selected to Presidents Cup Team

CHARLOTTE – Wake Forest men’s golf alum Cameron Young will represent the United States at the 2022 President Cup at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte from September 20-25.

After an outstanding rookie season on the PGA Tour, Young was chosen as one of six captains picks for the 12-person team on Wednesday, as announced by Team Captain Davis Love III. Additionally, fellow Demon Deacon and PGA Tour pro Webb Simpson will be the Assistant Captain for the United States.

Young will become the fifth Wake Forest player to compete in the event, joining Bill Haas, Jay Haas, Scott Hoch and Simpson.

Young has been on a hot streak on the course over the past 18 months, rising to prominence last season on the Korn Ferry Tour after back-to-back wins at the 2021 AdventHealth Championship and 2021 Evans Scholars Invitational presented by First Midwest Bank.

Those two victories helped propel him to finish inside the top 20 on the Korn Ferry Tour standings and earn his PGA Tour card.

Young had a run at winning his first major championship of his young career this season, finishing as a runner-up at the 150th Open Championship.

The two-time All-American jumped out to a three-shot lead after an opening round of 8-under-par. According to ESPN Stats & Info, Young was just the fifth player in Open Championship history to lead by multiple shots after 18 holes in his tournament debut:

  • 2022, Cameron Young

  • 1989, Wayne Stephens

  • 1982, Bobby Clampett

  • 1893, John Henry Taylor

  • 1874, Mungo Park

Young remained in contention all week long and was in the final two groups on both Saturday and Sunday.

After an early bogey to start his Sunday, Young surged on the back nine. He came within two multiple times and entered the famed 18th hole two strokes back of the lead.

After an incredible drive reached the green, he had 15 feet left for an eagle. Young sunk the eagle putt to momentarily take his first share of the lead Sunday at 19-under-par. Moments later, eventual champion Cameron Smith moved to 20-under-par with a birdie on the 18th.
