Alabama Men’s Golf Opens the 2022-23 Season at the Rod Myers Invitational


TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama men’s golf team will open the 2022-23 season this weekend when it competes at the 12th annual Rod Myers Invitational, which will be played in Durham, North Carolina. Duke University will serve as the host for the two-day, 54-hole tournament.

The tournament will feature 36 holes on Friday and the final 18 will be played Saturday, with all 54 holes being played at the par 72, 7,154-yard Duke University Golf Club.

The Lineup

  • The Crimson Tide lineup is highlighted by two returning starters, including All-SEC and All-District honoree Canon Claycomb who led UA in scoring average (70.92), average vs. par (-0.29), rounds of par or better (18) and top-five finishes (2) a year ago

    • Recently, Claycomb was ranked No. 16 in the nation according to PGA Tour University collegiate golfer rankings

  • Senior Thomas Ponder is the second-leading returner in terms of scoring average from a year ago (71.67), joining Claycomb to lead the Tide in top-20 finishes with three
  • Freshman Nick Dunlap, who came to Alabama as the No. 1-ranked junior golfer in the class of 2022 according to Golfweek, will make his competitive debut for the Tide at the No. 1 position
  • Returning veterans Jones Free and Jack Goldasich round out the Tide’s starting five for this weekend

Tournament Preview

  • The 54-hole stroke play competition will be contested Friday, Sept. 9 and Saturday, Sept. 10 on the par 72, 7,154-yard Duke University Golf Club in Durham, N.C.
  • In addition to No. 37 Alabama, other ranked teams include No. 23 North Carolina, No. 25 Liberty, No. 27 Duke, No. 34 Florida Gulf Coast and No. 42 Charlotte
  • Alabama is one of two SEC teams in the 14-team field, joining Missouri
  • Penn State, East Carolina, Princeton, Loyola (Md.), Virginia Tech, UNC Wilmington and UNC Greensboro round out the tournament field
  • The teams will have a shotgun start Friday at 8:15 a.m. CT (9:15 a.m. ET) while Saturday’s final round will feature tee times beginning at 6:35 a.m. CT (7:35 a.m. ET)
