COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State saved its best round of the tournament for the final round as the Buckeyes fired a 14-under par and finished 6th at the season-opening Frederica Cup in Saint Simons Island, Ga.
With the play-6, count-5 format this week, the scores were likely going to be low, and the Buckeyes took advantage. The team finished the 54-hole event at 29-under par and the 14-under score on Thursday was the third-best round of the day.
Junior All-American Maxwell Moldovan again led the way as he fired a bogey-free 5-under 67 in the final round. That put him in a tie for 13th at 10-under par. This was the fourth tournament of his career in which he finished double-digits under-par. For the week, Moldovan played the 12 par-5s in 12-under par, making eight birdies and two eagles.
Jackson Chandler made 15 pars, an eagle and a birdie in his final round of 2-under 70. He finished tied for 19th at 7-under par which was tied for his lowest finish in relation to par in his career.
Neal Shipley, playing in his first tournament as a Buckeye, also matched his career-best finish of 6-under par. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native led the team for the week with 16 birdies. His second round 67 was also tied for the lowest round of his career.
JonErik Alford made five birdies and just one bogey in his final round of 4-under 68. That brought him up to 31st at 2-under par which was tied for his career-low finish in relation to par as well. Adam Wallin posted a steady three rounds of 71-73-71 and was a shot behind Alford at 1-under par.
Jacob Tarkany rounded-out the Buckeyes with a final round 79.
The Buckeyes will return to action in just over two weeks when they play in the Inverness Intercollegiate at the famed Inverness Club on Sept. 26-27.
