Alabama Captures Rod Myers Invitational Team Championship

Alabama Rod Myers Invitational celebrates win

DURHAM, N.C. – Alabama men’s golfer Canon Claycomb claimed medalist honors to lead the Alabama men’s golf team to its first team championship in two years as it captured the Rod Myers Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Crimson Tide finished the two-day 54-hole event with a team total of 13-under par 851 (289-281-281), 11 strokes better than the next closest team.

Claycomb was spectacular throughout the weekend, as he finished the event at 11-under par 205 (69-71-65) which included a 7-under par 65 – one stroke off his career-low round. Teammates Thomas Ponder (-5, 211) and Nick Dunlap (-4, 212) were just behind Claycomb to five the Crimson Tide the top-three spots in the field.

The last time Alabama won a team title came on Oct. 7, 2020 when it captured The Blessings Invitational. Meanwhile, Claycomb won his second medalist honor after capturing the Watersound Invitational a year ago.

Individual Results

  • Claycomb caught fire on the back nine, collected six birdies and three pars to finish with a 30 over the final nine holes
  • His final round of 65 was the third-lowest single round in tournament history and the lowest shot in the event since 2018
  • With two rounds in the 60s, Claycomb now has 16 career rounds in the 60s
  • Ponder had a career-best finish with his runner-up result, marking the second top-five result and sixth top-10 result
  • After recording a 2-over par 74 in round one, Nick Dunlap responded with back-to-back 3-under 69 rounds to result in a third-place finish
  • Jones Free tied for 37th overall (224) while Jack Goldasich rounded out the Alabama golfers as he tied for 65th (230)

Tournament Results

  • After sharing the 36-hole lead with North Florida, Alabama’s 7-under par on Saturday was the best round of the day by any team
  • The Crimson Tide finished 11 strokes ahead of the tournament host Duke Blue Devils (-2)
  • Charlotte (-1) finished third followed by North Florida (866) and UNCG (873) to round out the top five teams
