Owens in Contention for Individual Title in Scottsdale

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The No. 19 Wake Forest men’s golf team were again led by freshman Boyd Owens in the Maui Jim Intercollegiate at Mirabel Golf Club on  Saturday.

The Baton Rouge, La. native, once again was the lowest player on the course for the Deacs, turning in a second round score of 67 (-3). He was one of three Demon Deacons to be par or better in the second round as Wake Forest is in 12th as a team going into the final round at Mirabel Golf Club.

Owens through 36 holes sits at 10-under-par and just three strokes off the individual lead. His score-to-par entering the final round is tied for 34th in program history and could move into the top 15 in program history if he shoots 2-under-par or better Sunday.

Joining Owens under-par in Scottsdale is sophomore Marshall Meisel, who was even par on the day. Meisel, who is playing in his third overall tournament in the lineup in his young career, sits at 4-under-par for the tournament and tied for 30th on the individual leaderboard.

The Demon Deacons will tee off their final round on Sunday starting at 11:40 a.m. ET. Wake Forest will play alongside New Mexico and Louisville as the teams tee of No. 10.

Fellow freshman Andrew McLauchlan claimed a top-10 finish in the Maui Jim Individual, posting a three-round score of 209 (-7) to tie for sixth in his first ever collegiate event.

Junior Clay Stirsman had a strong finish to his day to help him claim a top-15 finish at 2-under-par while sophomore Collin Adams earned a top-20 finish in his first outing of the season.
