SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The UCLA men’s golf team placed 17th out of 18 teams with a score of +8, 848 to open the season at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate at Mirabel Golf Club last Sunday.
Sophomore Evan Chien was the Bruins’ top finisher at the tournament, tying for 38th at 2-under (68-69-72). After birdies on the par-4 10th and 13th holes in Sunday’s round, Chien bogeyed 15 and 16 to drop to 2-over.
Pablo Ereño Perez opened the third round strong with birdies on the first and second holes. He finished the day 2-under 68 to get back to even par for the tournament and in a tie for 51st.
Senior Mason Greene tied for 70th (+4, 214). In round two on Saturday, Greene bounced back from double bogeys on the 10th and 13th with a string of three consecutive birdies on 15, 16 and 17 to get back to even par on the round. He ended the tournament with a 6-over 76 on day three.
The Bruins return to action in two weeks to compete in the Folds of Honor at the American Dunes Golf Course in Grand Haven, Mich. from Sept. 26-28.
