Colorado Opens Season Seventh At USF Intercollegiate

SAN FRANCISCO — The University of Colorado women’s golf team opened the 2022-23 season in seventh place after the first two rounds of the University of San Francisco Intercollegiate at The Olympic Club Ocean Course on Monday.
 
Colorado shot 17-over par, a two-round total of 585, at the 5,976 par 71 Ocean Course. The Buffaloes sit six strokes behind Oregon State and seven outside the Top 5 where BYU resides in fifth.
 
UCLA is the leader after day one, shooting 4-under, 564, for the first 36 holes. California is in second place at 2-under, 566, carding the only other under-par 36-holes in the field. Pepperdine is in third at 1-over, 569.
 
Ty Akabane of UCLA is the individual leader at 6-under, 136, after shooting a pair of 68s. Allysha Mae Mateo is second, one-stroke back at 137.
 
Colorado made a solid improvement between rounds one and two. The Buffaloes were in ninth place at 12-over after 18 holes, but improved by seven strokes in the second round, jumping up into the seventh spot.
 
“Not quite how we wanted to play, but we did see a lot of positives,” Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. “Too many big numbers – doubles and triples, but still a lot of positives.”
 
Sophomore Lauren Gooding was Colorado’s top performer, shooting 3-over, 145, sitting in 18^th place after two rounds. Gooding rebounded from a first round 75, to shoot the Buffaloes’ low round of the day with a 1-under 70 in the second. She had eight birdies on the day – tying for fourth best in the field – and three of those came on her final eight holes to finish off her third collegiate under par round.
 
Junior Hailey Schalk and sophomore Natalie Vo are both tied for 25^th, two shots back of Gooding at 5-over, 147. Schalk was even through her first 16 holes, but logged a triple bogey at the par-4 No. 8 to fall to 3-over, but immediately responded with a birdie at the No. 9 to round out her first 18 holes. Schalk had a pair of birdies early in her second round and finished with a 74.
 
Vo had the steadiest 36 holes of the afternoon as the lone Buff not to score any higher than a bogey. She had a 73 in the first round with the help of consecutive birdies at the par-5, No. 11 and par-4, No. 12. Vo parred 13 of the 18 holes in round No. 2, logging a birdie at No. 18 and finishing with a 74.
