Women's Golf Opens Play at Cougar Classic

HANAHAN, S.C. – The Penn State women’s golf team had a consistent day on the course and currently sits 14th in the 18-team field after the first 36 holes of the 18th annual Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall Club.

As a team the Nittany Lions carded rounds of 5-over, 289, and 7-over, 291, and currently sit 12-over entering tomorrow’s final round.

“We got off to a great start and had a lot of birdies throughout our lineup all day,” commented head coach Denise St. Pierre. “We let a few shots go, but we learned from some of the decisions we made and are looking forward to having a strong final round tomorrow.”

Ole Miss paces the field at 13-under followed by Clemson at 5-under as the Tigers climbed eight spots from the first to the second round after registering the round of the day, 9-under, in the second round. NC State is tied with Clemson at 5-under while Michigan State and Florida State round out the top-5 tied for fourth at 4-under.

Senior Mathilde Delavallade (Royan, France) paces the Nittany Lions at 1-under through 36 holes following rounds of even-par, 71, and 1-under, 70. Delavallade paired seven birdies with six bogey’s and is currently tied for 22nd for the championship.

“I stayed really patient throughout the day and focused on one shot at a time,” mentioned Delavallade. “My game was consistent, and I hit a lot of greens which helped me make some easy pars.”

Senior Sarah Willis (Eaton, Ohio) is tied for 29th at even-par through 36 holes following rounds of 2-under, 69, and 2-over, 73.

Sophomore Michelle Cox (Allentown, Pa.) shaved six strokes off her score between rounds firing a 1-over, 72, including a 1-under back-nine during her second round after a 7-over, 78, to open the tournament. Cox is currently tied for 79th.

Classmate Drew Nienhaus (St. Louis, Mo.) is tied for 73rd following rounds of 2-over, 73, and 5-over, 76 while senior Taylor Waller (Canonsburg, Pa.) rounds out the scoring at 11-over after two rounds.
