Steady Round From Sommerhauser Boosts Cats

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – Arizona Men’s Golf moved up one spot on the leaderboards behind Sam Sommerhauser’s 1-under round of 69 in the second round of the Fighting Illini Invite. Sommerhauser was one of 12 players to break par on Saturday out of a field of 78 competitors.

“We flipped the script on script on scoring from yesterday, starting slow this morning before posting better scores after the turn,” said head coach Jim Anderson. “Hats off to Sam on leading us with a very strong round today, including a bogey-free back nine with a pair of birdies. We rose up the leaderboard today, and I am confident tomorrow will be our best round of the tournament as we can end our weekend on a high note.”

Sommerhauser carded a steady round of 69 that included a single bogey with a pair of birdies. Freshman Zach Pollo carded an even round of 70 in the fifth round of collegiate career. Pollo sank an eagle on the par-4 fifth hole on Saturday for just the fourth eagle of the entire tournament.

The Wildcats dialed in their scoring on Olympia Field’s par 3’s, sinking four birdies on Saturday after not recording a single birdie on the course’s shortest holes on Friday.

Pollo and Filip Jakubcik, who carded Arizona’s best score on Friday, sit in the top 20 of the individual leaderboards entering Sunday’s final round. As a team, the Wildcats sit two strokes behind sixth-place Alabama and six strokes behind Oklahoma State.
