MADISON, Wis. – The Washington State women’s golf team shot even par; 288 in the second round of the 2022 Badger Invitational on Monday, Sept. 19, to move into a tie for fourth place heading into Tuesday’s final round.
The Cougars posted the third-best team score in the second round, as WSU shaved seven strokes off its total to move into a tie for fourth with North Florida heading into Tuesday’s third round. Washington State has carded 7-over; 583 through 36 holes of play at the University Ridge Golf Course and heads into the final round eight strokes shy of second-place Nebraska and 12 strokes away from first-place Notre Dame.
A pair of sophomores paced the way for Wazzu on the second day of the Badger Invitational, as redshirt sophomore Jinyu Wu and sophomore Madelyn Gamble each carded under par in a round for the first time this fall.
Wu matched her career-best single-round score as a collegiate golfer in the second round, as she shot 3-under; 69. The Beijing, China native lit the back nine a blaze in the second round, as Wu collected four-straight birdies on holes 10-13 to help her go 4-under over her final nine holes of play. Monday’s performance moved Wu up 15 spots on the player leaderboard, as she heads into the final round tied for eighth with fifth-year senior Darcy Habgood.
Gamble also posted her first under-par round of the fall season on Monday by shooting 1-over; 71. The Pleasant Hill, California native got off to a hot start in the second round, as she collected three of her four birdies on the day during the front nine. Monday’s performance moved Gamble up nine spots as she heads into the third round in a tie for 14th at 1-over; 145.
Habgood, who shot 1-under; 71 in Sunday’s first round came back and carded even par; 72 on Monday to end her day in a tie for eighth. The Australian native has shot 2-under on par-3 scoring in the tournament, which is the third-best score on par 3’s in the field. Habgood has also carded the second-most pars in the tournament with 27, just two off the lead and one ahead of teammate Madelyn Gamble.
