Badger Invitational Recap - Rutgers University Athletics

VERONA, Wis. (September 20, 2022) – Rutgers women’s golf had a successful second day of play at the Badger Invitational, as the Scarlet Knights improved on their round one score by three strokes to take sole possession of 8th place in the 13-team event.

Leigha Devine had the moment of the tournament on the 161-yard 12th hole, as her 9-iron was struck perfectly for her first-ever hole-in-one.

Devine’s hole-in-one on the 12th highlighted a 4-under 31 on the back nine. On the day, Devine shot a 3-under 69 (including 4-under on the Par 3s) and moved up the leaderboard into solo 5th place.

Maeve Rossi had another strong day, putting in four birdies and playing the back nine 2-under par to wrap up the day t-27 on the individual leaderboard.

Rutgers now sits in 8th place as a team with one round left in the event. The Scarlet Knights lead the tournament with both 120 pars and a 3.01 scoring average on Par 3s.

“Leigha put together a great round out here today. She attacked the pins on the Par 3’s and managed herself well around the course,” head coach Kari Williams said. “Maeve did an incredible job of bouncing back after a difficult start and played her last 11 holes at -3. And Lu made some adjustments after yesterday’s round that paid off today. We did well again on the back 9 today and took advantage of our scoring opportunities, and I’m looking forward to seeing us bring it all together in the final round tomorrow.

“Today was definitely a fun day of golf!” Devine said. “I got out to a bit of a slow start shooting +2 on the front nine, but after a pep talk from Coach I was ready to get going on the back nine. The hole in one on 12 was just unreal as it was my first ever! That momentum pushed me through the last six holes and I was able to capitalize on a few more good shots. Today’s round was definitely one I’ll remember!”

The final round of the Badger Invitational is set for Tuesday. Rutgers is currently in 8th place with a team score of 593 (+17). Notre Dame leads the event at 571 (-5) and is one of just two…
