Golfers In Tie For Eighth At UNM Tucker

    ALBUQUERQUE — The University of Colorado men’s golf team opened both rounds here strong Friday butn couldn’t maintain its success through the end of either as the Buffaloes are tied for eighth after two rounds of New Mexico’s William H. Tucker Intercollegiate.
 
        San Diego State takes a five-shot lead over host New Mexico into Saturday’s final round, as the Aztecs turned in a 17-under score 559 for 36 holes on Friday.  The Lobos closed to within five after recording the best single round of the day, a 14-under 274 in the second round to finish with a 563 tally.  TCU (566), UNLV (571) and BYU and Denver (581) round out the top five.
 
        Colorado is tied for eighth with New Mexico State at 10-over 586.  The Buffaloes were tied for sixth after recording a 5-over 293 score in the morning round.  CU failed to close strong in either round which proved to be its undoing; over the last five holes (Nos. 6 through 10 with the shotgun start format), it was 6-over in the first round and 11-over in the second.  Otherwise, the scorers were 7-under on the other 13 holes.
 
        Sophomore Justin Biwer led the Buffaloes Friday, firing a pair of 2-under par 70s on the 7,546-yard, par-72 UNM Championship Golf Course layout for a 4-under 140 total; that has him in 10th place.   He had an eagle, his first of the season and fifth of his career, eight birdies and 21 par birdies opposite six bogeys.  Poised to shoot in the 60s in the second round, he unfortunately finished bogey-bogey-par on Nos. 8 through 10 – he had scored his eagle on the 606-yard par-5 9th in round one.
    
        Sophomore Dylan McDermott fashioned a 71-72—143 scorecard, with that 1-under performance tying him for 17th.  He had seven birdies and 24 pars with four bogeys and a double, the latter coming late in the second round otherwise he was poised for two subpar rounds.
 
        Senior Adam Matteson is tied for 69th with a 7-over 151 after rounds of 74 and 77.  He had two birdies and 25 pars with nine bogeys Friday, four of the latter coming on his last four holes in the afternoon.  He had spans of eight and nine straight holes of par or better within each round.
 
        Sophomore Tucker Clark turned in a 78-74—152 effort, tied for 79th heading into the final…
