STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Mississippi State men’s golf team begins play at the SEC Fall Preview on Sunday after 17 days off. The Bulldogs, along with the other 13 SEC schools, are set for a unique event that incorporates both stroke and match play. Seven SEC schools are featured in the top 25: No. 2 Vanderbilt, No. 3 Auburn, No. 6 Texas A&M, No. 10 Florida, No. 13 Alabama, No. 20 Tennessee and No. 24 Georgia.
The three-day event will be played on the 70-par 7,204-yard course of Old Overton Club in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, on Sept. 25-27.
“I felt like our team has put in some great work over the past couple of weeks,” head coach Dusty Smith said. “We are excited for this next tournament because it’s the next step in our journey. Nothing changes for us; the focus needs to be on having an elite mindset and taking care of the simple things. If we do that at a high level and play to our standard, everything else will take care of itself. This week will test us and will be a good indicator of where we need to get to as the year progresses. The goal is to compete at a high level and to play to the high standard that we hold ourselves to.”
The tournament format will feature two rounds of continuous stroke play on Sunday and one round Monday. Each team is guaranteed three stroke-play rounds before Tuesday’s match play begins. Matchups will be determined by stroke play finish.
Ford Clegg and Hunter Logan will play their second event of the season in the No. 1 and 2 spots for Mississippi State. Clegg shot under-15 and finished T-4th at the Frederica Cup, while Logan saw a top-20 finish, shooting under-seven through three rounds at the tournament.
Harrison Davis moves up to the No. 3 spot from the No. 5 spot he was in for the season opener. Davis also turned in a top-20 finish in his first event. Garrett Endicott remains in the No. 4 slot. He finished in the top 25 at his first collegiate event, shooting 6-under while sinking in his first career hole-in-one.
Austin Vukovits will make his first appearance of the 2022-23 season, taking the fifth spot for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs will be paired with Auburn and Tennessee for an 8:30 a.m. CT shotgun start on Sunday.
