WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The nationally-ranked Wake Forest men’s golf team is set to defend its Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational title this week from Monday, Sept. 26 to Tuesday, Sept. 27 at Old Town Club.
The reigning ACC Champions and NCAA Regional Champions also claimed the 2021 Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational, winning by 14 strokes with a program-record score of 805 and breaking the previous record by six strokes.
Under the direction of longtime Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas, the Deacs had a historic season in 2021-22. The Demon Deacons won their first ACC Championship since 1989 last season and set a program record at the 2022 NCAA New Haven Regional, shooting 26-under-par and winning the regional by seven strokes. They were led on the course by PING Second-Team All-American Michael Brennan and All-ACC performer Alex Fitzpatrick.
In the 2021 Old Town Club Collegiate, the Deacs ran away with the team title after shooting 273 (-7) and capped off a tournament record 35-under-par performance, breaking the tournament record by five strokes.
After a record-setting opening round that tied Brennan (62, -8) for the second lowest round in school history. Brennan along with Fitzpatrick took a share of the lead heading into the final day at nine-under-par.
Both players traded the lead throughout the day and ended up both carding final rounds of 67 (-3) to share the title. This marks the third tournament title for Brennan and second for Fitzpatrick in their Wake Forest careers.
Their three-round totals of 198 are both tied for seventh in program history for a three-round event.
In total six Demon Deacons ended up with top 25 finishes behind Fitzpatrick and Brennan. Scotty Kennon grabbed his first career top-10 finish with a 54-hole score of 204 (-6). Marshall Meisel joined him in the top 15, tying for 14th at 5-under-par for the tournament.
Tomorrow’s first round is scheduled for a 8:25 a.m. (ET) start as Wake Forest tees off hole one. The Demon Deacons will be paired with College of Charleston and Georgia Southern on the opening day of play.
