TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – No. 14 Florida State Men’s Golf finished the first round of the Folds of Honor Collegiate as the only team under par, shooting 1-under on a cold and windy day at American Dunes Golf Club in Grand Haven, Mich.
“I saw some toughness,” FSU Head Coach Trey Jones said. “Our guys are growing up. It’s an honor to be here at this tournament. To see our guys come out here and compete and show some toughness is a really good thing.”

Three Seminoles ended the first day in the Top 5 on the leaderboard. Junior Brett Roberts is tied for second after carding a 2-under 70, recording six birdies in the process. He began the back nine with a 36 and then got hotter as the round went on, shooting a 34 on the front nine.
“Brett’s an All-American. He’s one of the top players in the country,” Jones said. “He’s just getting better and better. Once again there’s an example of a player from Miami who as a freshman would not have embraced this (weather conditions). It shows his growth to walk down and accept it and say ‘Hey this is the way it’s going to be’ and playing some great golf.”
Redshirt junior Cole Anderson and freshman Luke Clanton are each tied fourth after shooting 1-under 71s in the opening round. Anderson continues his strong play, picking up two birdies to just one bogey. Clanton continues to come of age, ending his round with three birdies in his last four holes.
Anderson is among the tournament leaders shooting 1-under on par 4 holes, while Roberts is at the top of the player leaderboard in par 3 scoring (1-under) and par 5 scoring (3-under).
Liberty is in second place at 2-over, followed by Oregon State (4-over), Illinois (4-over) and Arizona (5-over) in the Top 5.
Junior Gray Albright recorded a 3-over 75 and is tied for 30th, while Michael Mays shot a 5-over 77 and is tied for 45th.
Jones and the Seminoles have already enjoyed the true meaning of the tournament, which honors Military members and first responders.
“To be associated with this golf club and to be associated with the Folds of Honor and to have any kind of pull in this is an honor,” Jones added. “Part of our jobs as coaches is to put our players in situations where they can learn. They can develop and they can mature, and they get it all here.”
