The Scarlet Knights sit in 12th place in the team standings, while Leigha Devine (t-5) and Lucrezia Rossettin (t-18) lead the way on the individual leaderboard for RU.
Round One – Golfweek Red Sky Classic
Red Sky Golf Club – Fazio Course (Wolcott, CO)
Par 72 – 6,367 yards
The team score of 294 was the lowest of the season for Rutgers. The team put in 18 birdies, 11 of which came from Devine and Rossettin.
“We have some positive things to take away from today’s opening round,” head coach Kari Wiliams said. “As a team, we made a lot of birdies and rolled in many good putts. Tomorrow, we need to come out ready to score and focused on bouncing back after bogies.”
Devine led the Scarlet Knights with a 2-under 70, which was her fourth straight round of even-par or better to start the season. She started the day on the 10th hole and closed out the round with a 4-under 32 on the front nine thanks to four birdies and three straight on holes 3-5.
“It’s always fun playing back in Colorado,” Devine said. “Being up at altitude and playing up in the mountains is very familiar for me and it was great competing in front of family. This round was a grind but I was able to manage myself around the course to create a few scoring opportunities.”
Rossettin set the tone for the day with a birdie on her first hole of the day, the par-3 10th. She went on to birdie 17 and 18 to close out the front nine, while adding two more birdies at the 2nd and 8th holes to finish her round with an even-par 72. Rossettin played the par-3s at 2-under, the second-best mark in the field.
“I felt like I putted well today on these tricky greens,” Rossettin said. “The pins were placed near slopes but I rolled the ball nicely. I was able to stay composed throughout the round even after a few mistakes on my front nine, and I was proud to finish the round with another birdie. We’re all excited to come back out tomorrow and make a move up the leaderboard.”
The Scarlet Knights tee off for round two of the Red Sky Classic on Tuesday morning.
