GRAND HAVEN, MICH. – NC State senior Maximilian Steinlechner finished in second place on the individual leaderboard and the Pack finished eighth as a team at the Folds of Honor Collegiate held at American Dunes Golf Club.
Steinlechner posted back-to-back rounds of three-under par 69 in the second and third rounds to finish 54 holes at five-under. He and Liberty’s Jonathan Yaun went to a playoff to determine medalist honors. After both players had a par on the first playoff hole, Yaun chipped in for a birdie on the second playoff hole to win.
The runner-up finish is the ninth top-10 performance and third runner-up finish of Steinlechner’s career.
Steinlechner was one of just nine players in the 90-competitor field to finish 54 holes under par.
As a team, NC State finished in eighth place out of 18 teams. After struggling in the first round, the Pack posted a score of even-par 288 in the second round, the second best team score of the day to move up the team leaderboard. On Wednesday, NC State shot a 293 to close in eighth place, six shots ahead of ACC counterpart Clemson and just one shot back of seventh-place Michigan State.
Illinois took home the team title with a 15-shot advantage over second-place Arizona.
Carter Graf finished in a tie for 31st place at eight-over par. The NC State senior got better every round as he shot a one-over par 73 on Tuesday before finishing with a two-under par 70 in the third round.
Spencer Oxendine was next for the Pack in 40th place, three shots back of Graf. Oxendine tied for Steinlechner for the top round by an NC State golfer in the first round with a one-over par 73.
Michael La Sasso finished in a tie for 46th place, two shots back of Oxendine. The NC State freshman shot an even-par 72 in the second round.
Ethan Choi rounded out the NC State lineup in 59th place. Choi bounced back from a tough opening round to post rounds of 74 and 76 on Tuesday and Wednesday.
NC State returns to action Saturday, Oct. 15 when it hosts the Wolfpack Intercollegiate at Lonnie Poole Golf Course. The 54-hole tournament features the first two rounds on Saturday before closing with 18 on Sunday.
