Spartans Complete First Day at Windy City Classic


East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s women’s golf completed the first day of play at the Windy City Collegiate Classic on Monday.  The two-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at the par-72, 6,442-yard Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park, Ill.

Play was suspended in the second round with six teams still on the course, including the Spartans. The second round will restart on Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. (ET) and the third round is expected to begin at 9:30 a.m. (ET)>

The 15-team field includes 11 teams ranked among the top-40 in the country by Golfstat.

Day One Results

Southern California (No. 21) shot a 4-over par 580 (290-290) and leads the field by nine shots. South Carolina (No. 4) was at 13-over, with Oregon (No. 7) in third place at 15-over par. Both teams still needed to complete the second round. Michigan is in fourth place at 17-over par 593 and Duke (No. 10) rounds out the top-five teams at 21-over par 597.

The Spartans were in 15th place among 15 teams at 39-over par, including a 32-over par 320 in the first round.

Sophomore Brooke Biermann was tied for 32nd place and was at even-par in the second round with six holes to play.

Freshman Paula Balanzetegui was at 1-over par in the second round with three holes left. She posted an 8-over par 80 in the first round.

Fifth year Valery Plata had three holes to play and was at 3-over par in the second round. She shot a 10-over par 82 in the first round.

Sophomore Katie Lu was tied for 59th place at 12-over par 156, posting rounds of 8-over par 80 and 4-over par 76, respectively.

Sophomore Shannon Kennedy left the course with three holes to play and was at 2-over par in the second round after a 14-over par 86 in the opening round.
