Sun Devils sit in Third After Two Rounds at Ben Hogan Invite

Fort Worth, Texas – Sun Devil men’s golf completed the first and second rounds at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invite on Monday after shooting a 5-over, 285 in the first round, but bouncing back and improving by 13 shots to shoot a 8-under, 272 in the second round to head into Tuesday sitting in third place, seven shots behind North Carliona who is at 10-under par, 550.

Including Arizona State, all eight teams from last years quarterfinals in the 2022 NCAA Championships are competing this week in Fort Worth, Texas as the Sun Devils are seven shots back, but made substantial gains which included 24 birdies to shoot ASU up the leaderboard after two rounds.

Preston Summerhays finished his first round at 5-over 75 but after a huge second round he rebounded and a shot 7-under 63. Summerhays ended the day with the best individual Sun Devil score of 2-under which is tied for 10th. His 63 in the second round was only the second score of 63 of the season for ASU. Behind him is Michael Mjaaseth who shot a 139 (-1) and Josele Ballester who also shot a 139 (-1) in which they’re tied for 12th.

“I thought we did great today,” said ASU Head Coach Matt Thurmond. “Having to count a high one in round one is something we want to avoid, but we had a good day. 36 hole days are tough and we had the best round of the afternoon. That’s when everyone is getting tired. I like what that shows about our focus and toughness.”

Sun Devils Associate Head Coach Thomas Sutton said, “Preston’s 63 was as impressive of a round as I’ve seen. He is such a fierce competitor and he won’t ever give an inch out there. I’m looking forward to watching him compete for the win tomorrow.”

The third round will continue tomorrow morning at Colonial Country Club. Arizona State will be teeing off in a group with Stanford, Pepperdine and North Carolina at 8:50 a.m. CST.
