Preston Summerhays finished his first round at 5-over 70. After a huge second round where he shot 7-under 70, he ended the day with the best individual Sun Devil score of 2-under. Preston now sits tied for 10th as he looks to continue his reign of birdies in the third and final round. His 63 in the second round was only the second 63 of the season for Arizona State.
“I thought we did great today,” said ASU Head Coach Matt Thurmond. “Having to count a high one in round one is something we want to avoid, but we had a good day. 36 hole days are tough and we had the best round of the afternoon. That’s when everyone is getting tired. I like what that shows about our focus and toughness.”
Sun Devils Associate Head Coach Thomas Sutton said, “Preston’s 63 was as impressive of a round as I’ve seen. He is such a fierce competitor and he won’t ever give an inch out there. I’m looking forward to watching him compete for the win tomorrow.”
Out of the 16 competing teams, the Sun Devils tied for the best second round score of the day. ASU is also one of only two teams with three or more golfers in the top 12 of the individual leaderboard.
The third round will continue Tuesday at Colonial Country Club. Arizona State will be teeing off in a group with Stanford, Pepperdine and North Carolina at 8:50 a.m. CST.
