Cougs Claim Second at the Oregon State Invite


CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Washington State men’s golf team posted a second-place finish at the 2022 Oregon State Invitational to give WSU its second top-two finish of the fall. The Cougars ended the two-day tournament by carding 11-over; 863 as a team.

Junior Jaden Cantafio led the way for Washington State, as he finished in a tie for ninth. Cantafio jumped three spots on the player leaderboard in Tuesday’s final round after he carded even par; 71 to finish the tournament at 1-over; 214. Cantafio also tied for the tournament lead with 42 pars. It is Cantafio’s second top-10 finish of the fall, as he was one of four WSU golfers to finish inside the top-30 on the player leaderboard at the 2022 Oregon State Invitational.

After second-round action was suspended Monday due to darkness, Washington State closed out the frame Tuesday morning by shooting even par; 284 to head into the final round in second place. WSU went on to shoot 11-over; 295 in the third round to close out the 2022 Oregon State Invitational with a second-place finish. Washington State tied for the tournament lead on par-5 scoring at 12-under.

Freshman Sam Renner put up a strong performance on the second day of the tournament to capture his best career finish as a Coug. The Bend, Oregon native posted his best 18-hole score with WSU in the second round, carding 1-under; 70. The freshman finished the 2022 Oregon State Invitational shooting 4-over; 217 to finish the two-day tournament in a tie for 17th with teammate Preston Bebich.

Senior Pono Yanagi concluded the tournament in a tie for 28th with a final score of 6-over; 219. The senior collected six birdies and went 1-under; 70 in the second round to mark his fourth under-par round this season.

Sophomore Peter Jung tied for 51st as he finished 12-over; 225. Freshman Daniel Kim, who is competed as an individual in the Oregon State Invitational, carded even-par in his second round to highlight his tournament. Kim finished in a tie for 37th at 8-over; 221.

Kansas State, ranked No. 17 by Golfweek, took first place on the team leaderboard as they shot 3-under; 849 after 54 holes. Utah’s Javier Barcos posted 4-under; 209 to win the individual title.
