Penn State Completes First Day at Quail Valley Collegiate

VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Penn State men’s golf team finished the opening two rounds of the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational at 12-under, 564, and in a tie for 12th place in a tightly-packed team race Sunday.  
 
Just two strokes separate the seventh through 12th-place teams in the strong 16-team field.
 
After shooting a 2-under, 70, in the first round, freshman Jake Griffin surged up 12 spots in the second round to lead the Nittany Lions Sunday. He carded four birdies in his final eight holes to fire a 4-under, 68, in the second round. He sits tied for 13th at 6-under, 138, heading into Monday’s final round.
 
Senior Patrick Sheehan had Penn State’s best opening round, shooting a 4-under, 68, in the morning before carding an even 72 in the afternoon. He sits tied for 21st at 4-under, 140.
 
Junior James Allen is tied for 33rd at 3-under, 141, He carded a 2-under, 70, in the morning round and a 1-under, 71, in the second round.
 
Freshman Billy Pabst Jr. carded a 6-over, 78, in the first round, but rebounded nicely in the afternoon with a 1-under, 71. He sits tied for 77th at 5-over, 149.
 
Sophomore Morgan Lofland is in 84th place at 10-over, 154. He shot a 2-over, 74, in the first round and an 8-over, 80, in the second round.
 
The third and final round of the Quail Valley Collegiate, Penn State’s fall season finale, begins with 8 a.m. tee times tomorrow. Live scoring will continue to be available on GolfStat.
