Henriques posts top-10 to lead Tech at Governors Club


CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Symone Henriques carded an even-par 216 to tie for eighth and lead the Virginia Tech women’s golf team at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational, which concluded Tuesday at the Governors Club (par 72, 6,203 yards).

The senior from South Africa was steady throughout the tournament en route to her second career top-10 finish. She tallied rounds of 70, 72 and 74 to secure a spot inside the top-10. Henriques finished with eight birdies and an eagle over her 54 holes.

Ginnie Lee also turned in a respectable showing, tying for 26th with a 223. Her tournament scorecard was highlighted by a 2-under 70 in Monday afternoon’s second round.

Alyssa Montgomery, who led the Hokies with 11 birdies, tied for 33rd at 225, followed by Becca DiNunzio (228) and Morgan Ketchum (229), who tied for 48th and 54th, respectively.

Kentucky held on for the team title, signing for a 4-under 860. Five shots behind and taking runner-up was Wake Forest. Tournament host North Carolina secured third with a 13-over 877. The Hokies took eighth with an 890 (295-288-307).

Pacing the Wildcats was tournament medalist Jensen Castle, who fired a 7-under 209, to tie Duke’s Phoebe Brinker. Castle won on the first playoff hole – the par-3 ninth – by making par.

Tech concludes its fall slate Oct. 28-30 at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C. UNC Wilmington will host the 54-hole event at the Country Club of Landfall.
