Kentucky’s Jensen Castle, a senior from West Columbia, S.C., eagled the next-to-last hole of regulation to force a playoff and won the individual title on the first extra hole to complete a Wildcat sweep at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational Tuesday at the Governor’s Club.
Jensen led the ‘Cats to the team title by five strokes over Wake Forest. UK teammate Laney Frye was third just one shot out of the playoff, which Castle won over Duke’s Phoebe Brinker with a par on the par-3 ninth hole.
Castle (74-67-68) and Brinker (67-70-72) were tied atop the leaderboard after 54 holes at 7-under 209. Frye was third at 210 and a pair of Demon Deacons – Emilia Migliaccio and Lauren Walsh – tied for fourth place at 3-under 213.
Kayla Smith led the host Tar Heels as she tied for eighth at even-par 216 (72-68-76). UNC freshman Megan Streicher tied for 12th at 1-over 217.
Krista Junkkari had the best round of the day for UNC with an even-par 72.
Kentucky won the title with rounds of 290-283-287 for a 4-under 860 total. UK led Wake Forest by a stroke after 36 holes and was the only team to shoot under par on the Governor’s Clubs Lakes and Foothills courses.
Wake Forest finished 1-over 865 for the tournament.
The Tar Heels finished third behind Kentucky and Wake Forest. Carolina was four strokes off the lead after 36 holes but shot 12-over 300 in the final round to close at 13 over.
Tennessee was fourth at +18, Duke, Louisville and Michigan tied for fifth at +19, Virginia Tech was eighth +26, UNC was ninth at +29, Michigan State was 10th at +30, NC State was 11th at +31, Furman and Princeton were both 12th at +34 and Rollins was 14th.
