Deacs Sit Tied or Above Three Top-10 Teams in Georgia

ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Behind strong performances from freshman Boyd Owens and senior Mark Power, the Wake Forest men’s golf team sits ahead of or tied with three top-10 teams after the opening round of play at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate.

Owens and Power were the lone Deacs to be below par in the first round of play in Alpharetta, Ga. and helped the Demon Deacons to a tie for eighth in the stacked field. The Deacs sit ahead or tied with Virginia, Tennessee and Texas A&M who all sit inside of the top 10 in the latest GolfStat rankings.

Starting off of hole No. 10 to start the morning after frost delayed tee times by an hour, Power and Owens both found birdies on the opening hole to help set the table for under-par days. In total, Power birdied six of the first 10 holes and at one point in his round sat as low as 4-under-par.

After Owens’ birdie on the first hole, he bogied three of the next six holes and was 2-over. Owens immediately bounced back, carding birdies on the next three holes. He added two birdies later in the round and was bogey free over the last 11 holes of the day.

Power and Owens are tied for 12th on the individual leaderboard at 3-under-par.

Junior Michael Brennan and sophomore Scotty Kennon both turned in counting rounds of 73 (+1) for the Deacs on Friday.

In the second round, Wake Forest will be paired with host Texas A&M and individuals again with the group set to tee off No. 1 starting at 10:50 a.m. ET.
