East Lansing, Mich. – Senior Drew Hackett fired a 2-under par 70 and Michigan State’s men’s golf team is tied for fourth place among 10 teams at The Williams Cup, being hosted by North Carolina at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, N.C.
The tournament, named in honor of former UNC men’s basketball coach Roy Williams, continues on Saturday morning and will finish on Sunday.
The Spartans shot a 10-over par 298 and are tied for fourth place with UNC Wilmington.
Host North Carolina (No. 8 per Golfstat) leads the field at 1-under par 287. Five teams are separated by only six shots between second and sixth place, with Louisville in second place (5-over par 293), NC State in third (6-over par 294), Michigan State and UNCW tied for fourth and Kent State in sixth place (11-over par 299).
Hackett, who tied for second placed at the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational last week, continued his strong play. A native of North Carolina and playing on a course in the city where he spent three years in college, Hackett birdied three holes on the way to his 2-under par and he shares the lead with Kent State’s Jordan Gilikson. Hackett was one of six players to post under-par scores on Friday.
Junior August Meekhof, who was in the lead during the first round, bogeyed three-straight holes on the back and tied for 11th place at 1-over par 73.
Senior Bradley Smithson is tied for 30th place at 5-over par 77 and fifth year Troy Taylor II is tied for 35th place at 6-over par 78. Sophomore Ashton McCulloch is tied for 53rd place at 11-over par 83.
The Spartans tee off on Saturday morning starting at 8:30 a.m., playing alongside UNCW and Kent State.
