MALLORCA, Spain (courtesy DP World Tour) — On an afternoon of twists and turns, overnight co-leader and University of Colorado alum Yannik Paul (’18) had been in the driving seat on the back nine before a two-shot swing at the 15th handed his playing partner Marcus Armitage a two-stroke lead with three holes to play.
But as Armitage dropped three shots over the next two holes, Paul saved par at the 17th to find himself tied for the lead as he made his way to the 18th.
And the German coolly slotted in his difficult 15-foot birdie try from the fringe at the last to deny Paul Waring and Nicolai von Dellingshausen a playoff.
Paul made three birdies and four bogeys on a tricky afternoon for scoring at Son Muntaner Golf Club, finishing the tournament on 15 under par to enter the winner’s circle for the first time in his 26th DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour) appearance.
His scorecard for the weekend was 71-64-62-72—269 on the 6,952-yard (6,357-meter) par-71 Son Muntaner Golf Club course.
Fellow German Von Dellingshausen and Englishman Waring finished in a tie for second one shot back, with Von Dellingshausen jumping up 44 places to 77th on the DP World Tour Rankings in Partnership with Rolex.
Ryan Fox is up to second on the Rankings, overtaking Matt Fitzpatrick, after the New Zealander finished in a share of fourth on 13 under alongside Dale Whitnell.1
Armitage was in a three-way tie for sixth another shot further back, along with last year’s champion Jeff Winther and Jazz Janewattananond.
Paul entered the final round alongside Fox at the summit after notching three eagles in a flawless 62 on Saturday but knew he was in for a battle on Sunday when he bogeyed two of his first seven holes.
Despite missing the eighth fairway a long way right, Paul recovered to pick up his first birdie of the day there from eight feet.
That moved him two shots clear of his nearest challengers, and he tapped in for birdie on the par-five 11th to remain two ahead.
Back-to-back bogeys on the 14th and 15th saw Paul slip to 14 under, and with Armitage picking up his fourth shot in six holes at the 15th,…
