Bruins Fall to Texas A&M in First Round of Match Play at East Lake Cup

ATLANTA – The No. 20 UCLA women’s golf team lost to No. 3 Texas A&M 3-2-0 in the semifinals of the East Lake Cup at East Lake Golf Club on Tuesday. The Bruins will face No. 6 Oregon, who lost to No. 25 Auburn today, in a consolation final tomorrow morning.

Sophomores Caroline Canales and Zoe Antoinette Campos won their matches 2&1 and 3&2, respectively, while Alessia Nobilio, Annabel Wilson and Emilie Paltrinieri lost.

The Bruins and Aggies were tied 2-2-0 and were waiting on the outcome of Paltrinieri versus Hailee Cooper to determine who would advance to the championship final. Paltrinieri was clutch down the stretch with a two putt on 14 and a par save on 17 to tie the contest. However, a walk-off, pitch-in eagle by Cooper on the 18th sealed the Bruins’ fate.

Canales led Adela Cernousek for 14 holes until Cernousek notched a birdie on the par-3 15th to tie the match. Canales proceeded to win the 16th and 17th, forcing Cernousek to concede. Campos led wire-to-wire against Texas A&M’s Jennie Park and won by dormie on the 16th hole, up three.

Campos tied for second in the stroke play portion of the tournament as one of eight golfers to finish even par or better. Campos’ day was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 14th.
