Shepherd Shoots Under-Par Saturday at Landfall


WILMINGTON, N.C. – Senior Erica Shepherd registered four birdies on Saturday and carded a second round of 2-under, 70, at the Landfall Tradition, which is being played at the 6,150-yard, par-72 Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.

With her round of 70, Shepherd is tied for 23rd overall entering Sunday’s final round.  Shepherd, who hails from Greenwood, Ind., notched her seventh round of even or under par this season and 32nd of her Blue Devil career.  

How It Happened

•    Duke opened morning action on hole No. 10 for the second straight day.  

•    Erica Shepherd collected Duke’s first birdie of the day on the 336-yard, par-4 11th hole as she hit her 60-degree wedge from 80 yards to seven feet.  After four pars and a bogey on No. 14, she hit her pitching wedge from 120 yards to 10 feet for birdie on No. 17 to get back in the red.  Shepherd made the turn at 1-under, 35, and then registered her third birdie on No. 2 as she rolled in a 10-foot putt.  She closed her round with five pars, one birdie on No. 9 and a bogey to finish with a 70.  

•    After opening the morning with a 5-over score over her first seven holes, sophomore Rylie Heflin played her final 11 holes at 4-under-par.  She got things started with back-to-back birdies on No. 17 and No. 18. Heflin then added seven pars alongside birdies on No. 4 and No. 9 to finish with a 1-over-par, 73.  

•    For the second straight day, freshman Andie Smith played her first nine holes at even par.  She opened the day with a bogey, but then played the next seven holes at 2-under.  Smith drained a 10-footer for birdie on No. 13 and then stuck her approach on No. 14 to one foot for birdie.  After a bogey on No. 18, Smith opened the back nine with three pars before sinking a 10-foot birdie on No. 4 to move to 1-under.  She closed the day 4-over during the final five holes to finish with a 75.  

•    Junior Anne Chen started her day with a 4-over-par, 40, on holes 10-18.  She closed the afternoon with an even-par, 36, as she collected one birdie on No. 6 by hitting her pitching wedge from 110 yards to eight feet.  Chen finished the day with a 76 and is tied for 51st with a 149.  

•    Junior Phoebe Brinker was limited without a birdie in a round for the first time as a Blue Devil as she finished with a 76….
