Bulldogs In Second After Day One At Daniel Island

STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Mississippi State men’s golf team finished the first round of the Daniel Island Intercollegiate in second place, just one stroke behind Florida-Gulf Coast for the lead.

Three different players – Ford Clegg, Garrett Endicott and Austin Vukovits – currently sit in the top five individually. As a team, MSU has an eight-stroke advantage ahead of Seton Hall, Middle Tennessee State and South Carolina.

“We showed a lot of grit and toughness today in some very difficult conditions,” head coach Dusty Smith said. “I thought the guys handled the day well and hung tough all day. We need to make sure we continue to focus on doing the simple things at an elite level and playing to our standard.”

Clegg led the way for the Bulldogs and currently sits in a three-way tie for first with South Carolina’s Gene Ziegler and Pierre Viallaneix from Florida-Gulf Coast. Clegg got off to a hot start on the front nine, sinking four consecutive birdies as well as an eagle on the No. 8 green.

He finished the day with 72 for the round.

Endicott and Vukovits finished Day 1 in a nine-way tie for fifth place after both players shot 74s. Endicott shot par or better on 10 of his last 11 holes. Hunter Logan and Ruan Pretorius finished the round in a 10-way tie for 24th, and Pedro Cruz Silva is tied for 57th.

“Tomorrow is a great opportunity for our team,” Smith added. “We look forward to the challenge.”
