CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Illinois women’s golf team opened the Hurricane Invitational in eighth place after carding a 36-hole team total of 576 (+4) heading into Tuesday’s final round at The Biltmore Golf Course.
Isabel Sy turned in rounds of 70 (-2) and 69 (-3) and ended the day tied for second place, just one stroke off the tournament lead, trailing only San Diego State’s Bernice Ilas. Sy collected eight birdies on the day, totaling five in the first round while tallying three in her bogey-free second round. The junior also carded a team-best 26 pars during the first 36 holes. The San Gabriel, Calif., native, is seeking her second Top-5 finish of the season.
Crystal Wang also ended the day in the Top 5, sitting tied for fourth at four-under after rounds of 72 (E) and 68 (-4). Wang birdied six times in her second round, including a stretch of four-straight on holes 8-11. The graduate student has posted a tournament-best score of four-under on par 4s and also leads the field with 10 total birdies. The Diamond Bar, Calif., native, has a chance to record her fourth-straight Top-5 finish and her eighth-straight Top-15 finish.
Lexanne Halama fired rounds of 73 (+1) and 70 (-2) and is tied for 21st. Halama is three-under on par 4s, the second-best mark among the field. Siyan Chen is tied for 63rd after back-to-back rounds of 77 (+5) and Alise Knudson is tied for 66th after rounds of 78 (+6) and 77 (+5).
Mattie Frick, competing as an individual, carded a career-best two-under 70 in the opening round and followed up with an even-par 72. Frick is tied for 15th and birdied a total of nine holes, the second-most in the tournament.
UNLV leads the tournament after posting a two-round total of 564 (-12), with BYU 569 (-7) and SMU 571 (-5) rounding out the Top 3.
Tuesday’s third and final round begins with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m. CT.
