Colorado Remains In Ninth After Two Rounds Of The Pac-12 Preview

KAILUA KONA, Hawai’i — The University of Colorado women’s golf team maintained its spot in ninth place after two rounds of the 2022 Pac-12 Preview played at the Nanea Country Club on Tuesday.

The Buffaloes were 17-over-par, 309, on the day to stay in the ninth position at 23-over, 607 through two rounds.

Higher scorers were the norm for the field on the 6,449-yard par 73 Nanea Course. Tougher hole placements and increasing winds during the later portion of the day had the field playing two-plus strokes higher than Monday’s first round.

Top-ranked Stanford, at 14-under, 570, has a nine-stroke lead over No. 6 Oregon (-5, 579) after 36-holes. The Cardinal and Ducks were the only two teams in the red in the second round, both at 1-under. Eight of the 12 teams in the field were double-digits over par.

Colorado caught a bit of bad luck in the scoring. The Buffaloes would have been four-strokes better, but freshman Morgan Miller signed an incorrect card, an error she acknowledged herself, which erased a 78, the team’s fourth-best round of the day. Instead, Colorado had to count its fifth score, an 82 by junior Hailey Schalk.

The scoring change didn’t change Colorado’s spot in the standings. The Buffaloes still would have been ninth after the day, but are now nine strokes behind eighth-place Oregon State instead of five.

“Rough day for our team,” Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. “We had stretches of good holes, but too many big numbers. Unfortunately, Morgan Miller signed an incorrect card; she signed for a score on No. 10 that was lower than her actual score.”

Sophomore Natalie Vo leads Colorado after two rounds, tied for 15th at 1-over, 147. Vo shot the Buffaloes’ first sub-par round of the tournament, with a 1-under, 72. She birdied her first hole, at the 464-yard, par-5, No. 13, with the shotgun start. Vo made her way to 3-under with birdies at the 342-yard, par-4, No. 2 and the 466-yard, par-5, No. 4. She fell back to even with three bogeys in a four-hole stretch at the end of the front nine, but got back into the red with her fourth birdie of the day at No. 10.

“Natalie was our bright spot today,” Kelly said. “She played a very solid round of golf, especially toward the end when the wind really picked up on the final six or seven holes.”

Senior Issy Simpson is tied for 40th at 8-over,…
