KAILUA KONA, Hawai’i – Behind senior Gile Bite Starkute’s rise up the leaderboards on Tuesday, No. 13 Arizona Women’s Golf ended the second day of the Pac-12 Preview in third place at 4-under par. Starkute shot 3-under par in the second round after shooting the same score a day earlier to enter Wednesday’s final round in a tie for third at 6-under par.
“Today was a challenging day for the entire field, and I feel we didn’t completely capitalize on the outstanding day we posted yesterday,” said head coach Laura Ianello. “Gile was strong again for us today, and I continue to be proud of her competitive drive in every tournament this season. We have played some quality golf through the first two days here in Hawaii, and we are in position to finish strong on Wednesday.”
Arizona was 8-over as a team on Tuesday as only two of the 12 teams in the field broke par in the second round. The team finished the second round one stroke behind second-place Oregon while Stanford broke away from the entire field at 14-under par.
The Wildcats continue to dominate Nanea Golf Club’s par 5’s with Starkute tying Stanford Rose Zhang for the top par-5 scoring average. Sophomore Lilas Pinthier also broke par for a second day on Tuesday, carding a 1-under round to move up to tenth place at 2-under par. Arizona’s third top-20 individual is freshman Julia Misemer who sits in a tie for 20th at 2-over.
Arizona will play alongside Stanford, Oregon and Arizona State in Wednesday’s third and final round, and four leading teams will begin play on the first hole.
