CHARLESTON, S.C. – Sophomore Gene Zeigler held on Tuesday for his first career victory at the Daniel Island Intercollegiate, the team’s fall finale. The Florence, S.C., native shot 74 (+2) to win by three shots over Middle Tennessee State’s Owen Stamper.
Zeigler made the turn at 3-over and then was 5-over after a double bogey at the par-4 10th hole. He then made back-to-back birdies and closed with a birdie at the par-5 18th hole to shoot 35 (-1) coming into the clubhouse. Zeigler entered the day with a six-shot lead thanks to a 68 (-4) in round two on Monday. He was the only player in the 104-man field to post a red number all week. Zeigler shot a 54-hole season best score of 214 (-2) and was the only player in the field to break par.
The Gamecocks shot 298 (+10) in the final round and slipped a spot on the leaderboard to finish T-4th alongside Memphis with a 54-hole total of 892 (+28).
Freshman Zach Adams also had a nice tournament, notching his first career top-10 with a T-8th finish at 5-over. He shot even par today with a trio of birdies on his scorecard.
Fifth-year senior Evans Lewis shot 75 (+3) and graduate transfer Zack Byers shot 77 (+5) to round out the team’s counting scores.
